Artificial Insemination for Horses - Made Easy

Advantages of A.I. for Mares and Mare owners.

After attending a BEVA Equine A.I. Technicians course approved by DEFRA and passing relevant exams, I feel the advantages of  A.I. far out weigh any minor disadvantages' one may encounter.

For the mare:

  • Not having the stress of traveling to the stud and home again during the tender and crucial time of early pregnancy, (often resulting in the foetus being reabsorbed)
  • Not having to cope with the stress of being away from her familiar home surroundings, (often resulting in the mare not cycling properly causing difficulty with settling the mare)
  • No danger of being injured by an “over keen” stallion or by other mares she may be turned out with whilst at the stud, (accidents unfortunately do happen)!
  • No danger of being exposed to any possible viruses or infectious disease from other horses at the stud.

For the mare owner:

  • Peace of mind that the mare remains in the owners care during the breeding season, whether or not the mare has a foal at foot already.
  • Having assurance that the semen provided is of high quality and has been tested for sperm count and progressive motility, with documentation as proof. (Not possible with live cover.)
  • No cost incurred transporting mare to and from stud.
  • No mare care/ grazing costs incurred during time at stud.

Why ~ How ~ Where ~ When

Within the next few "case history" examples I hope to be able to answer most of the questions you may have regarding the often, misunderstood and even feared conceptions of Artificial Insemination procedures for our equine friends.
These next few paragraphs are about real horses.

Artificial Insemination - Case Study 1

Sweet Jasmine: Chestnut, 15.3hh registered American Thoroughbred.
Owned by Daphne.

I received a call to say Jas was in season. I discussed with Daphne the mare's behaviour, and when I felt the optimum time for insemination was, and we arranged for me to visit. This took place, I inseminated the mare standing in the paddock, then 18 days later the vet scanned the mare and found her to be in foal.
Some 11 months after insemination Jas gave birth to a beautiful palomino filly by "Moonlight Venture". She was sequentially inseminated again on the morning of the 9th day after foaling.
This resulted in a positive scan 18 days later and yet another palomino baby, this time a colt. A full brother to the above filly.
Owing to Jas retaining the placenta post foaling and needing veterinary assistance we waited until her 30 day cycle this time before insemination. From memory I think we inseminated her twice this time, two days apart as she had a longer season than last time
She was scanned again at the 18 day time frame and was reported to be in foal. This time she produced "Arnie" a stunning dun and white colt by "Kiowas Mr Speckles". Jas was in good health and was inseminated again on her foal heat (the morning of the 9th day) She was scanned in foal yet again… But this time with twins! Our stud vet "pinched one" and suggested she return to scan again in 10 days or so, to ensure the remaining foetus was still "hanging on in there" so the day was booked, the scan completed and yes baby was still there and growing. Then in the middle of the night in the middle of the field in a terrible rain storm (with out the slightest of clues or warnings) "Flame" made her entrance in to the world, A Sorrel and white sister for "Arnie". I'm afraid this case starts gets a bit boring now, cause she has done the same thing twice more to date. Producing 2 more fillies. A red dun and white and a chestnut and white Both to Kiowas Mr Speckles.
This record is not unusual in any way for a brood mare that is kept in good health.
This mare is what we call a "good breeder" Unfortunately not all mares are quite so prolific.

Artificial Insemination - Case Study 2

"Hettie" Dun Cob Cross

We had a call to supply semen to a customer "up north" for a big dun cob cross mare. So we collected, extended, checked and posted the semen as requested.
20 days later we had a phone call from the customer's vet requesting more semen, as the mare had returned. No problems, we repeated the exercise.
Another 20 days passed and again we had a repeat of the same request. Again no problem (for us!)
The Customer was getting frustrated as she was told the mare was ovulating too early!
The customer brought Hettie all the way down to us here at the stud. We checked her daily. We noticed her coming in to season on the Monday so decided to inseminate her the very next day………… Too late…. On the Tuesday morning we checked her with the stallion and she had obviously already ovulated as she was rejecting the stallion's advances quite strongly. Ah ha….. So a lesson learnt. We counted the days and around the 19 day time frame we checked her with the stallion and as expected she returned in season. We inseminated her the moment she even started to show an interest in the stallion. We checked her the next day and again she rejected the stallion's advances. We had her scanned 18 days later and yes a positive pregnancy. A gorgeous Palomino Filly.

Artificial Insemination - Case Study 3

Chestnut TB Cross

A lovely, very knowledgeable horsewoman requested me to provide semen and inseminate her mare (nice mare too) No problems. Job done! About 3 weeks later I received the call, not in foal! Ok, I went down and repeated the process. Another 3 weeks passed, not in foal. I suggested she get the mare checked for any signs of infection. Vet was called and swabbed the mare. The results came back that the mare had cervical thrush. Ouch! Not nice.. The mare was treated and rested over the winter. I returned in the spring and inseminated the mare. 19 days later I received the call to say the mare was safely in foal. That foal has now gone on to be graded and has a terrific career ahead of her in the show ring then later in the brood pen. Meanwhile the mare has successfully produced and raised a foal every year since.

Artificial Insemination - Case Study 4

Sally

Sally Sally Sally… This is what we say every year… She just never tells us when she is in season. Not helpful. We can take her over to see the stallions every day, but she never gives us any clue as to when she is in season. She just stands there as if to say… Whatever!!! Who Cares!!
So each year we try her on her foal heat… Very successful for many….But for some reason not her….
So then we count the days for her 30 day cycle and get her scanned. This year she beat us at 28 days and had already been in season and gone over….
So we waited 10 days, injected her with prostaglandin and inseminated her on the 4th and 6th day… That did the trick…. Scanned in foal.
We get her in foal every year, but she sure makes us work for it!

Artificial Insemination - Case Study 5

"Tip off" A bay TB polo mare.

The owners came and visited the stud. Chose Pecas Bright Bar as the sire for their future polo pony.

They phoned me saying their mare was in season. We collected the semen, I drove out to their place, inseminated their mare. At 18 days they had their mare scanned…. In foal and 11 months later Tip off delivered their gorgeous bay and white filly.

These are just a very few examples of the mares we have worked with over the years we have been running the stud.

Each mare and each foal is special, and we really do appreciate the owners concern and commitment to their equine friends.

This is just one of the many reasons we specialise in Artificial Insemination….  (Taking the stress out of equine reproduction.) Whether for experienced breeding mares or maiden mares.

We do no live cover. Not even with our own mares.

If you would like to know more about any aspect of artificial insemination please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give me a call at any time.

 Sandra

It is with these reasons in mind we proudly offer “transported chilled semen” from all of our stallions this season.
